With "Tap to Pay on iPhone" allows you as a merchant to accept contactless payments from credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Watch and smartphones with other digital wallets directly on your iPhone without the need for additional hardware or terminals. This guide will help you set up and use the feature.
Requirements
- An iPhone XS or newer with iOS 16.4 or later.
- An app that supports "Tap to Pay on iPhone" feature and has been downloaded from the App Store. (The "Tap to Pay on iPhone" feature is controlled directly by Apple, and we have no influence on the rollout in other countries: https://developer.apple.com/tap-to-pay/regions).
- An account with an Apple-approved payment service provider (PSP).
Step 1: Create/login a merchant account
Create account
- Open the app and follow the instructions to create a merchant account.
- Enter all required information and submit for verification.
- Verification usually takes less than 15 minutes*. After successful verification, you will receive a notification via email, SMS or push notification.
*Note: The duration of the verification may vary depending on local regulations.
Existing accounts
- If you already have an account, login with your existing credentials.
Step 2: Activate "Tap to Pay on iPhone"
After successful login or registration, as soon as you select the POS, the app will ask you to "Tap to Pay on iPhone" to activate.
Tap the notification or pop-up that appears to start the activation.
Accept the terms of use for "Tap to Pay on iPhone".
Follow the instructions for configuration. This only takes a few moments and is indicated by a progress bar in the app.
Step 3: Training and guidance for dealers
After activating "Tap to Pay on iPhone" you will be guided through a short training session that includes the following:
- Accepting payments: Instructions on how to accept contactless cards, Apple Pay and digital wallets.
- Supported payment methods: Information about supported payment methods such as Visa, Mastercard, etc.
- PIN entry: Instructions on how to enter PINs (if required in your region).
Point 1a: Instructions for accepting physical payment cards
- Open the SIDES Restaurant app and navigate to the POS area.
- Take the customer's order.
- Present your iPhone to the customer to make the payment.
- Your customer holds his card horizontally to the top of your iPhone, over the contactless symbol.
- As soon as the check mark "Ready" appears on the screen, the card has been successfully read, and the transaction is being processed.
Point 1b: Instructions for accepting Apple Pay and other digital wallets
- Open the SIDES Restaurant app and navigate to the POS area.
- Take the customer's order.
- Present your iPhone to the customer to make the payment.
- The customer holds their device (e.g. iPhone or Apple Watch) to the top of your iPhone, over the contactless symbol.
- As soon as the check mark "Ready" appears on the screen, the payment is successful, and the transaction is being processed.
Point 2: PIN entry
Enabling accessibility options for PIN entry:
- If a customer needs visual or other assistance, you can use accessibility options. Simply select "Accessibility options” on the PIN screen.
- Audible instructions guide the customer to draw their PIN on the screen or tap the screen to indicate each digit – tap once for 1, twice for 2, and so on.
- To enter the PIN, the customer simply swipes to the right with two fingers.
- [For offline PIN markets] Some cards cannot complete contactless transactions with a PIN. If this happens, ask the customer if they have an alternative contactless card or digital wallet and continue the transaction using Tap to Pay on iPhone.
This training content is available at any time in the settings or help section of the app.
Step 4: Payment process
- Add item: Add items to your shopping cart or enter a payment amount.
- Initiate payment: Tap the visible "Tap to Pay on iPhone" button at the checkout.
- Complete payment: Hold the customer's contactless card, iPhone, or Apple Watch to your iPhone to complete the payment.
- Confirmation: After the successful transaction, the status (successful, declined, expired) is displayed. You can send the customer a digital receipt via SMS, email, QR code or other methods.
